New News
1. Birthday Parties - Are you celebrating a birthday and not quite sure where to have your party?  Why not have it at the Village?  The summer months are filling up because everyone knows the Animal Village is the best place to have a birthday party.  And, you don't have to be a kid to have your birthday party there!  If you are interested in booking the Animal Village for your next party, please contact Joan Adcock at djadcock@comcast.net.

2. Adoption Fun
 - The "Friends of the Animal Village" (FAVs) group is Little Rock Animal Village's main fundraising organization.  FAV periodically holds adoption drives at the Animal Village and thanks to their help, we adopted out 150 animals in July!  FAV needs your help!  Please come out to the Village on Saturdays to volunteer.  Want more information?  Visit  http://friendsoftheanimalvillage.org/ or become a fan on Facebook.

3. Kitty Krew and Kitty Fosters
 - Are cats and kittens your forte?  Can't get out to the Animal Village but still want to help?  Contact Debbie Heller at debbie.jonunderhill@comcast.net and she will put you to work!  As a reminder, if you sign up for the Kitty Krew you would work once a week at the Petsmart on Chenal Parkway.  The time of day is flexible and duties will take from an hour to 3 hours depending on how many people come into the adoption center and want to see the cats and/or talk.  Our responsibility is to maintain the cages and socialize the cats.  Training is provided.  The Kitty Krew does an amazing job taking care of the cats - be part of something awesome!

4. Rescue Waggin'
 - The PetsMart Rescue Waggin' program saves lives each month by transporting adoptable dogs and puppies from overpopulated animal shelters to destination animal shelters where they are in demand.  If you would like to help us get the dogs ready for this month's trip, please be at the Little Rock Animal Village on Tuesday, August 16th at 4:30 a.m. (that's not a type... that's 4:30 in the morning...;).  It will take approximately 1.5 hours to get the dogs ready to leave on the Waggin' at 6:00 a.m.

5. Fosters - We need fosters for our Rescue Waggin' program!  Are you looking for a way to help the animals of the Village this summer?  Why not consider fostering.  Fostering helps our dogs get used to being in a home environment and interacting with people, which makes them even more adoptable.  If you can open your home for a few week please contact Sandy Moore atsxmoore@sbcglobal.net.

Reminders for LRAV Volunteers
1. Important information about disease prevention - When you arrive at the Animal Village you will notice that there are now foot washes outside of every row of kennels.  Volunteers must now step in the foot washes before entering the kennel rows.  Volunteers will also need to step in the foot washes before re-entering the kennels, too.  As always, when it doubt, as a staff member.

2. Puppies and Kittens
- Just a reminder, volunteers cannot handle puppies and kittens, unless the volunteer has attended the Red Level 1 Class, Blue Level 2 Class, and Puppy/Kitten Class.  If you are unsure whether a dog/cat is classified as a puppy/kitten, please ask a staff member before you remove the puppy or kitten from its kennel.

3. Dogs in the play area
 - Volunteers can only have dogs in the dog play areas if they have completed the first dog handling class.  All other volunteers will need to walk dogs on a leash.  This new policy is in place to make sure our volunteers know the proper technique when introducing multiple dogs so that all involved - canine and human - are safe.  There is just so much material in the Red Level 1 class that this additional dog handling class will help our volunteers get hands on experience introducing dogs to one another.

4. Dog Handling Classes - One BIG reason for our recent increase in dog adoptions at the Animal Village is the behavior and socialization skills being taught to our dogs by the volunteers.  Dogs that are generally well behaved and can perform basic tricks (sitting, shaking, retrieving, etc...) get adopted more readily than dogs that don't have these skills.  In our dog handling classes at the Animal Village, we "train" our volunteers how to "train" our dogs.
As a reminder, you must complete the Red Level 1 volunteer training class before you are eligible to take the dog handling classes.

Our August dog handling classes follow:

-    Level 1 class (beginner):           August 6, 10:00 - 12:00 (noon)
-    Level 2 class (intermediate):     August 13, 10:00 - 12:00 (noon)
-    Level 3 class (advanced):          August 20, 10:00 - 12:00 (noon)

You can even bring your own dog(s) to the class to learn proper training techniques. If you have any questions, please contact the instructor Cindy Alberding at calberding@att.net.

5. Cat Room activity cards - Attention all cat volunteers!  Debbie has placed activity cards on each of the cage card holders in the cat room.  When you get a cat out, please fill out the index card so that other volunteers can know which cats need to get out.

6. Volunteer Training - The next volunteer training day will be Saturday, January 14th.  Please come prepared to handle the animals. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. The schedule for the classes follows:

-    Red Level 1 class (beginner):          9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
-    Blue Level 2 class (intermediate):  11:00 - 12:30 p.m.
-    Green Level 3 class (advanced):    12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

Please e-mail Jamie at LRASVolunteers@gmail.com to schedule your attendance at any of these classes.
